Alpha FMC Launches Claims Inflation Index

Alpha FMC

London, 04/11/2024 – Alpha Financial Markets Consulting (“Alpha”) has launched an industry first Claims Inflation Index, a comprehensive index designed to provide insights into the cost trends associated with home insurance claims in the UK. The Index tracks the inflationary pressure on claims costs across various perils, offering invaluable information to the home insurance industry.

What is the Alpha Claims Inflation Index?

The Alpha Claims Inflation Index functions similarly to the Consumer Price Index and the Retail Price Index monitoring the costs of claims settled across several common home insurance perils. Tracked quarterly, the Index uses a baseline period and offers insights from a range of participants to highlight trends in settled claim costs.

Included in the Index are the most commonly occurring buildings claims perils, ensuring the data reflects cost challenges across the most pressing and prevalent loss types.

Creation of the Index

The Index was built by analysing claims cost data, starting from a baseline in Q1 2020, offering a four-year window of insight into the inflationary trajectory of home insurance claims in the UK. For each peril, the average cost of a claim was compared to the baseline to provide an in-depth understanding of inflation trends for both the market and the individual participants.

The 7 founding participants in the Alpha Claims Inflation Index contributed by completing detailed survey questionnaires, breaking down the volume and average costs of claims settled across each quarter, ensuring the robustness of the data – in aggregate, almost £2bn in indemnity spend across c.1m claims has been analysed.

Benefits for Home Insurers

The Alpha Claims Inflation Index offers a unique perspective on how inflation has impacted different perils in the property claims market. It also highlights how market participants may have been exposed to  macroeconomic pressures as well as more insurance-specific challenges such as weather events. The Index provides insurers with the opportunity to measure their own cost changes against those of their peers, offering valuable benchmarks for strategy and cost management. Alpha would be delighted to discuss the Index in greater detail with those not already taking part. Please contact Huw Barker for further information (huw.barker@alphafmc.com).

Key Findings

  • The Index revealed an average annual cost inflation rate of 14% since 2020 across the home insurance market.
  • By Q4 2023, the total cost of property claims had increased by 61% compared to Q1 2020.
  • By comparison, the Consumer Price Index only grew by 22% in the same period, indicating that property claims inflation has significantly outpaced general consumer inflation.
  • Inflationary pressure on property claims appeared to accelerate from 2021, potentially driven by challenging macroeconomic conditions and climate volatility in the UK, coupled with pressure on supply chains and broader operational challenges suffered by insurers.
  • Seasonal perils, such as Storm & Flood, Subsidence, and Escape of Water, showed the greatest inflationary increases, rising by up to 71%since Q1 2020.
  • Storm & Flood claims were particularly volatile, underscoring the ongoing challenge insurers face in managing surge events.

Huw Barker, Partner at Alpha FMC commented: “The Alpha Claims Inflation Index provides a vital new benchmark for the home insurance industry. In a period marked by rising macroeconomic inflation and volatile environmental conditions, understanding how claims costs are evolving is essential for insurers to remain competitive and manage their loss ratio. This index not only helps insurers track and compare their own performance against market trends, but also offers crucial insights into the pressures shaping the sector.  The index supports insurers in making better informed decisions on pricing, risk management, and claims handling, ultimately improving their ability to compete in an ever-changing landscape.”
